A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about my favorite fitness wear since I have gotten back into my work out routine. Since that post I’ve gotten questions from some of you asking what I eat to stay healthy/give me energy while I exercise daily. Well today is the day! But let me start by saying I believe in balance and portion control. I do not go on any diets or count calories etc. I just simply try to eat healthier and whole, and ex.

Believe me when I say that I love Chick Fil A as much as the next person, I’m just more aware of how much of it I eat on a monthly basis. At the core of a balanced diet are foods that are low in unnecessary fats and sugars and high in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. A balanced diet is one that gives your body the nutrients it needs to function correctly. Almost every day I eat the same things and workout at the end of my day leaving my weekends for “cheat days” as I like to call it. 

Now this may not be 100% healthy or correct in the eyes of a nutritionist and I’m not saying I’m not a professional at all about this, but this is what works for me and keeps me feeling full of energy and healthy on a daily basis.

My Routine: 

Monday through Friday

  • Morning: one scrambled egg with a glass of water and bowl of diced strawberries.
  • Lunch: salad with spinach leaves, diced baby tomatoes, walnuts and Asian dressing. Also, drink a liter of water.
  • Dinner: I usually have some type of meat and vegetable for dinner, like chicken and steamed broccoli or squash. 

Added Tips:

  • I also love to make smoothies on the weekend when I’m running on errands instead of my usual eggs for breakfast.
  • I try to cut my alcohol intake down, so I usually only have a glass of wine or beer every once and while and hardly ever drink hard liquor.

When I do have my cheat days and go out on the weekends, obviously I don’t follow my week day routine (above). However, when I do eat out I make sure whatever I’m getting I portion control it. What I mean is if I order a burger I’ll usually only eat half of it because 1. I know I won’t be able to finish it and 2. If I force myself to eat it all I will feel very bloated. Ever heard of the saying “You eat with your eyes when you’re hungry”? Well that’s exactly what I try to avoid… unnecessary over eating. 

I said it before and I’m going to say it again, but portion control has helped me so much! It just makes sense and you don’t really have to cut out anything you love to eat from your diet as long as you exercise and balance things out.

How to Achieve a Balanced Diet:

  • Fruits:Fruits are high in natural sugar and are such a better choice for you than other foods with added sugar. I love to eat strawberries, bananas, apples and grapes. I love to have some cut up in a bowl for breakfast to start my day.
  • Vegetables:Eating a variety of vegetables will help you obtain the nutrients that all vegetables provide. I like to have dark leafy greens such as spinach leaves, broccoli, green beans and collard greens. I also love steamed carrots, squish and brussel sprouts. 
  • Grains:Eating whole grains such as pasta is a great choice that provides much more nutrition into your diet. 
  • Proteins:Meats and beans are primary sources of protein which is essential for proper muscle and brain development. I like to eat beans, peas and walnuts.
  • Dairy:We all know that dairy products provide calcium and vitamin D but for me it is very hard to intake dairy without having a really bad stomach ache. So instead I have opted for soy milk and it seems to do the trick/I still get my nutrients. Keep in mind though that diary is a major source of fat so maybe eat them in small portions. 
  • Oils:Oils should be used sparingly like salad dressing. However, some oils such as olive oil is good for you and can replace fattier vegetable oils in your diets.
